Lake Margaret Hydro PowerOne of the fascinating Queenstown Tasmania things to do. At the turn of the last century the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway company was one of the largest and wealthiest mining operations in the country. Having consumed the forest for energy, and coal not being found, engineering thoughts turned to Hydropower. Commissioned in 1914, Lake Margaret Hydropower Station is still in operation today, a true testament of engineering brilliance from the turn of the century. It is one of the oldest operating Hydropower station in Australia. See the horizontal shaft Pelton wheel turbines driving open alternators and feel their roar, Marvel at the King Billy 1.2m diameter wood stave water pipes and imagine how life would have been for the early pioneers. We explore the recently abandoned Lake Margaret Village taking in a short presentation in the village hall whilst sipping a hot beverage and enjoying a delicious snack.
